Peter Hanna has participated in the Cabot Trail Relay Race since its inception in 1988. He has two legs left to run to be the first person to complete the Cabot Trail twice. The Cabot Trail is 298 km (186 miles) of highway which weaves through The Cape Breton Highlands National Park, rewarding travelers with spectacular valley and coastal views all along the way. He is undertaking this challenge at 80 years old, while going through treatment for prostate cancer. This story is about running, friendships, aging and how to overcome burdens life presents.

Episode 1 - Part 1

In this episode we’re introduced to Peter Hanna and running friends, Michelle Murphy, Dean Abbas, Chris ‘Bighead’ Milburn and Julie Curwin. We find out why Peter is known by the local running Cape Breton running group as ‘The Godfather’. Peter is living with cancer and talks about how the treatments affect his life, particularly his running. Dave Parkinson explains what the Cabot Trail Relay is and why so many runners want to compete in this competition each year.

Episode 2 - Part 2

Peter takes on Leg 6, the first of two legs to complete the Cabot Trail for the second time. Leg 6 is 17.5km and rated a 4.5 out of 5 in difficulty. Although beautifully scenic, this leg has many challenging hills, something Peter struggles with due to his cancer treatment. During this Leg, Peter digs deep to try and complete the leg on a hot summer day in Cape Breton and overcome some other health issues which he didn’t realize he had.

Episode 3 - Part 3

Peter is joined by some members of the Cape Breton running community to complete his final leg of the Cabot Trail Relay. Leg 17 is 18.7km and also 4.5 out of 5 in difficulty. During his run, Peter talks to his running friends who represent his running story from the youth he inspired to those who ran the first Cabot Trail Relay with him in 1988. He shows true perseverance, dedication and stamina while running into Chubecto Street in Baddeck to cheers from family and friends.
